Apple is believed to have acquired Spotsetter, a “social search engine” for finding places to go, according to TechCrunch.

Spotsetter quietly shut down its app last week with the following announcement:

With fondest emotions, I’m announcing that we are closing down Spotsetter app. We still have big dreams for personalized search for places and look forward to seeing great progress in this area. Thank you everyone for your support over the past years!

TechCrunch reported that members of the Spotsetter team that have joined Apple will help improve its Maps offering by adding a social layer to it.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.
