Apple officially introduces the SE, a new 4-inch iPhone for only $399

Apple officially introduces the SE, a new 4-inch iPhone for only $399

As expected, Apple debuted a new, small iPhone at its event this morning, and it’s officially called the iPhone SE.

Turns out, the spoilers about this one were pretty accurate. It’s the same overall size as the iPhone 5S, but has a matte chamfered curvature around the edges rather than the subtle curves that the iPhone 6 lineup has. Really, it’s the same overall size as the iPhone 5S with slightly curved screen edges and no camera protruding.

Internally, the iPhone SE is top-notch. It has an A9 SoC and M9 coprocessor making it twice as fast as the iPhone 5S, along with an NFC chip for Apple Pay. The rear camera is 12 megapixels, while the front-facing camera is 5 megapixels that uses the screen for flash. Apple also has its latest Wi-Fi and cellular technology in the SE, making it as much ‘mini iPhone 6S’ as refreshed 5S.

The SE also has Touch ID, but lacks the screen technology capable of 3D Touch. You can get the iPhone SE in Space Grey, Rose Gold, Silver or Gold.

Pricing for the device starts at $399, which brings you 16GB of internal storage, or $499 for 64GB.

If you’ve had your eye on Apple’s memorable iPhone 5S, you’re out of luck; the iPhone SE replaces the 5S in Apple’s smartphone lineup. The iPhone SE will be available for pre-order on March 24 and in-stores on March 31. Apple promises to bring the SE to many more countries by the end of the year.
