Apple used the first slot at its keynote to unveil the efforts its been making on the environment – no doubt an attempt to show it’s definitely the good guy, in case you were wondering.
It’s now running on 100 percent renewable energy in 23 countries – including the US and UK, as well as in all of its data centers – totaling 93 percent renewables across its entire operations.
In China, it’s using fields more commonly home to yaks to provide renewable for all of its 38 retail stores there. In Singapore, it’s got solar arrays across 800 rooftops.
To relieve a bit of your guilt as you unbox your latest phone, Lisa Jackson, president of environment, policy and social initiatives, also explained that 99 percent of Apple’s packaging is recycled or “sustainably managed forests.”
She emphasized the company’s commitment to this, saying “that’s why we design our products to last,” not strictly true if you’re ever shattered your phone screen after a tiny drop.
Jackson also unveiled a “new R&D product” called Liam, that it’s started using to reverse engineer iPhone so every single piece can be recycled.
“There’s no other machine in the world that can do what Liam can do,” Jackson said.
She also outlined the Apple Renew program, for recycling your iPhone at any store today.
