Using its read, write and search API’s, any application can read where your Facebook friends check in, publish check-ins AND search for relevant places.
Competing with Google’s Places API and SimpleGEO, it means any application can use Facebook’s database of places to improve the social location features of the app.
What isn’t available is a create API, so third party application won’t be able to create new applications within Facebook’s database.
