Angry Birds Sells 6.5 Million Copies, Shoots For 100 Million Paid Downloads

Angry Birds, the popular iPhone game of destruction from games studio Rovio has sold more than 6.5 million paid copies on the Apple App Store, surpassing 11 million downloads of its lite version in the process.

VentureBeat spoke with the developers of the game, where they mentioned that the company had not spent any money on advertising as it was selling its product to iPhone owners in over 60 countries.

You wouldn’t know it, but the developers at Rovio have not only enjoyed hit success with their Angry Birds game, they have also worked for some of the biggest gaming companies in the world. Electronic Arts approached Rovio for develop an iPhone port of their hit Need For Speed Carbon, just one title of the 52 games that have been created and installed on handsets.

The game hasn’t just been a success on the iPhone either, iPad owners are starting to enjoy the phenomenon that is Angry Birds. When the iPad launched, Rovio released a $4.99 version of its game, which has sold more than 200,000 copies and continues to sell over 50,000 units a day.

The end goal for Rovio is to sell over 100 million paid downloads, a distant target but certainly obtainable.

Rovio are hoping the Angry Birds buzz will allow its game to sell well as it moves onto the WebOS and Android platforms, there are even console ports of the game on the company’s roadmap.
