Amazon selling more than 1 million Kindles a week

Amazon selling more than 1 million Kindles a week

Amazon has been selling over one million Kindles per week for the last three weeks, the company reports. These impressive sales are driven by Amazon’s recently launched tablet, the highly popular Kindle Fire.

According to the company, the device has been breaking records since its launch 11 weeks ago:

“Kindle Fire is the most successful product we’ve ever launched – it’s the bestselling product across all of Amazon for 11 straight weeks, we’ve already sold millions of units, and we’re building millions more to meet the high demand. In fact, demand is accelerating – Kindle Fire sales increased week over week for each of the past three weeks,” said Dave Limp, Vice President for Amazon Kindle.

It’s not just on Amazon.com that Kindle Fire is a bestseller; as we reported, it was also the bestselling tablet at Target stores on Black Friday, outselling its direct competitor, Barnes & Noble’s latest NOOK Tablet.

However, Amazon emphasizes that its other Kindle devices have been performing well too, as they offer an interesting alternative to multimedia tablets – not to mention lower pricing:

“Our family of Kindle e-ink readers are close behind Kindle Fire on the Amazon.com bestseller list. Customers continue to report preferring their Kindle e-reader for long-form reading, and in fact we’ve seen many customers buy two Kindles – both a Kindle Fire and a Kindle or Kindle Touch – this holiday season,” Limp added.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Kindle Fire is only available in the US, meaning that international customers can only set their sights on Kindle e-readers this Christmas.

Yet, it would be wrong to think Amazon is neglecting foreign markets, and the company recently released French, Spanish and Italian versions of its Kindle to follow the launch of its Store in these countries.

While Amazon hasn’t disclosed global numbers yet, it would be very interesting to know how many tablets and e-readers it will sell in total this holiday season.
