Amazon now lets mobile app developers upload promotional images for the Appstore

Amazon has started accepting images from app developers and publishers that will be used in ‘featured placements’ to more effectively market them to end users.

The news was announced yesterday on Amazon’s (little known) Mobile App Distribution Blog and in an email to developers earlier today (see below).

The company is urging app developers and publishers to use ‘colorful, engaging imagery’ (which must be 1024×500 pixels, in PNG or JPG format) that ‘reflects the essence’ of their mobile applications.

Text can be added, but not the price of or discounts for the app or anything like that.

Amazon notes that it will be expanding its use of uploaded promo images to ‘new marketing opportunities’, without going into further detail.

Here’s the email that was sent out to developers:

Dear Mobile App Distribution Developer,

Amazon is now accepting promotional images for your apps. Promotional artwork gives you an opportunity to capture the attention of customers using colorful imagery that reflects the essence of your apps. Our marketing team is already using promotional imagery in featured placements to highlight apps to customers, and we’ll be expanding use of these creative assets.

Promotional images should be 1024 x 500 pixels and in PNG or JPG format. We encourage you to submit your promotional image now to take advantage of these new marketing opportunities. Learn more on the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Blog.

At Amazon, we focus on helping you grow your business by connecting you with customers, and promotional imagery is the newest opportunity for you to do so. We also invite you to submit your apps for consideration for featured marketing placements. Visit the blog to learn more about requesting a featured marketing placement.

We look forward to seeing your new promotional images!
