Amazon has just launched Amazon.es, its Spanish store, one day earlier than expected.

The store only sells physical goods – books, music, DVDs and electronics – but the company intends its full range of products to be available by the end of 2011, including its popular Kindle e-reader and associated e-books.

Shipping costs are as competitive as Amazon’s other stores. Standard 3-5 days shipping within Spain costs € 2.99 per shipment. There’s free shipping on orders for books over €19 (3 to 5 days shipping) and for guaranteed one business day delivery, it will set you back € 8.99 per shipment.

Amazon Premium is also live in Spain with free delivery all year round for a € 14.95 annual subscription.

The launch is a timely one for Amazon. With all signs pointing to an Amazon tablet launching this year, establishing international Amazon stores, particularly with digital content, is a must if it is to compete with Apple’s iPad.

Amazon currently maintains a presence in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Japan, China and now Spain.
