Aereo announced today that it will be releasing an Android app on October 22. It’ll launch as a public beta in the Google Play store and will only be available to existing Aereo subscribers, where the controversial antenna and Internet-based television service is already available.
Aereo is unique in that it uses a huge number of tiny antennas to pick up a local TV broadcast signal and pipe it to individual subscribers over the Internet. This means the range of channels and content varies depending on the subscriber’s current location.
The nature of this system means that Aereo is having to roll-out across the US rather slowly; it’s currently available in New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Miami, Houston and Dallas. The company plans to launch its service in additional cities both this year and throughout 2014.
Aereo is currently available on the Web, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Roku devices and Apple TV, via AirPlay.
