The T-Mobile G1: 2008-2010

The T-Mobile G1: 2008-2010

Today we mourn the father of a movement, the T-Mobile G1, AKA the HTC Dream. It was the very first Android phone to market, with it’s 528 Mhz processor and 320 x 480 touchscreen. And who could forget that wonderful trackball?

It may have been almost two years ago, but for a time the G1 was one of the best phones on the market. It was the first real competition against Apple and the iPhone as far as modern smartphones go. But it makes sense that T-Mobile dropped the G1 from the lineup, especially given how far Android phones have come. If you were to buy an Android phone today, it’d almost definitely be the Samsung Vibrant.

The death of the venerable Android slider does give credence to the rumors that T-Mobile will be releasing the HTC Vision under the G1 brand name, calling it the “G1 Blaze,” which is expected to be the first handset to take full advantage of T-Mobile’s super fast HSPA+ network. If the rumors are even close to true, you can expect a sliding QWERTY phone with at least a 1 Ghz processor and a 3.7-inch capacitive this September.
