Ideal Gifts: Stack Magazines delivers a monthly dose of beautiful analog reading

In the Ideal Gifts series, The Next Web team shares personal recommendations for gifts to give this holiday season.

Screens are brilliant. My house is filled with laptops, tablets and e-readers for stuffing as much interesting reading as possible into my eyeballs, but there’s still something great about print. That’s where Stack Magazines comes in.

Stack Magazines

Stack Magazines is a subscription service that sends you a different independent magazine each month. The price depends on your location and the length of subscription you plump for – from £5.50 a month in the UK, under €12 a month in Europe and under $17 a month in the US.

Why shell out for printed stories when you can gorge for free online? Because there’s a great element of serendipity with Stack. You find yourself reading about topics you wouldn’t ordinarily have stumbled upon, whether it’s in-depth movie journalism from Little White Lies, Huck’s amazing documentary photography or a return to childish concerns with independent kids’ magazine Anorak.

If you already subscribe to one of the titles Stack chooses from or come across one you don’t like, you can opt out and they’ll send you an alternative.

I like the Stack set up because it both helps keep independent publishing in print alive and exposes you to interesting, beautiful magazines. It’s also a great excuse to tear yourself away from all those screens for an hour or two.
