At last, SimCity is getting an offline mode

Despite claiming that an offline mode for SimCity was “not possible“, video game developer Maxis has announced plans to do just that.

The new mode will ship with update 10 and allow all SimCity players to access all of their previously downloaded content without an internet connection. While offline, you’ll be able to play solo and reload your game file as often as you wish.

General Manager of Maxis’ Emeryville studio Patrick Buechner said the mode was “in the late phases” of development, but refrained from giving a firm release date. Offline play will soon be tested with a group of its most hardcore players, known as DevTesters, before it’s made available to the wider community.

SimCity was plagued with connectivity problems at launch, barring players from accessing the game due to server issues, or causing them to lose their progress without warning. While these issues have long since died down, Maxis has struggled to recapture the pre-release hype for SimCity.
