It can be hard to remember when new content is streaming online – you don’t get assaulted with loud commercials nearly as much as on TV, after all – but it looks like Netflix and Twitter now want to make your life easier by tweeting you reminders.
It appears Netflix is using a custom Twitter card – it also shows up on the Web once you expand the tweet:
Clicking the button prompts you to tweet the text in message above. We contacted Netflix and were told:
The reminder will come in as an @Reply from the @MarcoPoloMP Twitter account, directed at each user who has opted in, as soon as the episodes are available at 12:01AM Pacific time on December 12, and will include a custom video message from the cast.
It’s possible Netflix is using Twitter’s new Fabric SDK to monitor tweets in order to set reminders; this would be similar to how Jawbone’s Drop music service is able to create custom playlists by looking for certain keywords in your tweets after connecting your Twitter account.
It’s a clever way to keep track of the individual shows you’re interested in watching without the need to constantly be bombarded by ads for everything else. We’ve only seen the reminder button for this one show, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix started using it for other content in the future.
