Imgur begins converting GIF uploads to MP4 videos with new GIFV format

Imgur begins converting GIF uploads to MP4 videos with new GIFV format

Photo sharing site Imgur today announced a site-wide upgrade that will convert GIF files to MP4 videos to improve loading times and mobile performance.

Dubbed Project GIFV, the changes allow Imgur to accept GIFs up to 50MB in size, up from the previous limit of 5MB. Here’s an example of a 5MB GIF compared to a new converted 50MB file.

The new GIFV format should also work well on social networks like Twitter and Facebook since uploads will register as videos. Imgur plans to submit GIFV to standards organizations for broader use on the Internet.

My only concern about GIFV is how to pronounce it since we still haven’t come to an agreement about GIFs.
