Mojang’s stellar 2012: 15 million Minecraft downloads, mobile apps the most popular

Mojang’s stellar 2012: 15 million Minecraft downloads, mobile apps the most popular

It was a big year for Mojang and its co-founder Notch (aka Markus Persson), as its insanely popular sandbox game Minecraft continued to entice young and old gamers alike. But just how big was it? Think 15 million downloads, almost a third of which were downloaded in December alone.

Sharing its performance in a blog post, Mojang shared the download figures for each of its Minecraft games across all platforms, which currently includes PC, Mac, Xbox 360, iOS and Android.

The most popular download was Minecraft: Pocket Edition, the app released specifically for iOS and Android. While downloads were not broken down separately, the app was downloaded 5,899,727 times in 2012, with 283,939 copies purchased on Christmas Day. December 25 sales contributed towards an impressive 706,419 downloads over the Christmas week.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (published by 4J Studios) managed a total 5,002,370 downloads across the year and the PC/Mac edition held its own with a total of 4,177,843 copies were downloaded in 2012.

The company teases the new Minecraft: Pi Edition, which carries “a revised feature set” and “support for several programming languages.” The new edition will allow gamers to code directly into Minecraft before or after they start playing but you can also allowing them to break open the code and use a programming language to manipulate things in the game world.

At the end of December, 2 Player Productions, the producers of Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, uploaded the documentary to The Pirate Bay. This came after an announcement that the film would premier for free on Xbox Live to Gold subscribers in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, the UK, and the US.
