Twitter Announces “Points of Interest”

As part of its location drive and integrated into into its search product is new feature called “Points of Interest”.

In twitter co-founder’s own words: “A way to see where a tweet is coming from but also a way to read all the tweets coming from specific nearby landmarks.”

More specifics on the service will be shared later, but what we do know is that it puts to use Twitter’s “geo API,” the set of developer tools that currently allows Twitter messages to be accompanied by the latitude and longitude coordinates of where they were posted.

Points of interest will likely include establishments such as restaurants and bars, as well as other locations such as parks. Similar in one perspective to Foursquare and Gowalla, leading location services that have you “check in” at specific landmarks.
