Each year Google summarizes its year in search, which looks at what people around the world were searching for over the last twelve months.
The top searches of 2015 are in, and Google’s made yet another new microsite to show them off. For overall global searches of 2015, the top ten were:
- Lamar Odom (yeah, we had no idea who that was either)
- Charlie Hebdo
- Agar.io
- Jurassic World
- Paris
- Furious 7
- Fallout 4
- Ronda Rousey
- Caitlyn Jenner
- American Sniper
By comparison, and perhaps more understandably, last year’s top searches were Robin Williams, the World Cup and Ebola.
In technology, the top consumer searches probably won’t surprise you, though they are a mixed bag:
- iPhone 6S
- Samsung Galaxy S6
- Apple Watch
- iPad Pro
- LG G4
- Samsung Galaxy Note 5
- Samsung Galaxy J5
- HTC One M9
- Nexus 6P
- Surface Pro 4
Perhaps what’s most impressive there is the scale of searches for the iPhone 6S versus everything else on the list. The new iPhone’s overall searches dominates the last quarter of the year, four times as high as any other search.
In the graph above, the spikes for each device happen around the time it was announced and then again when it was generally available.
Last year’s technology searches featured the iPhone 6 in the top spot, Samsung Galaxy S5 in number two and the Nexus 6 in third.
As for top global news, searches were dominated by the attacks in Paris:
- Charlie Hebdo
- Paris
- Hurricane Patricia
- Isis
- Nepal
- El Chapo
- Greece
- Baltimore Riots
- San Bernardino
- Hurricane Joaquin
Google’s site for exploring trends this time around is actually pretty amazing, allowing you to delve deeper into trends as well as the stories behind them.
It features interactive infographics, the questions people were asking and what countries searched for different topics the most.
