Google launches Nexus 6 Android smartphone with 6-inch display, available to pre-order October 29

Google launches Nexus 6 Android smartphone with 6-inch display, available to pre-order October 29

Google has launched the Nexus 6, its newest smartphone and successor to the Nexus 5, which will be available to pre-order on October 29 and in-store from November.

Key specs of the Motorola-made device include a 2.7-GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor, the most recent Android Lollipop OS, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and of course, that 6-inch Quad HD display. Internal storage is set at 32GB or 64GB. And the cost? $649 from the Google Play Store, according to Motorola’s blog.

Also on the front, there are dual front-facing speakers and “turbo charger” feature which Motorola claims will add 6 hours of battery life in 15 minutes. Alongside this, Lollipop also includes a new battery saver feature that promises to increase the life of your device by up to 90 minutes.

Following the trend of other range-topping handsets, the Nexus 6 is the latest in a long line of devices with screens larger than 5-inches, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it bears more than a passing resemblance to Motorola’s existing Moto X device.

Obviously, one of its most notable contenders here is the iPhone 6 Plus – and while it’s unlikely to sell in the same numbers, this launch date will be welcome news for Android fans looking to get their hands on Android 5.0 Lollipop, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system.

Google officially said “late October” for pre-orders, but the exact date is October 29, according to The Verge. It’ll also be available from Motorola’s site and through the normal retail channels from November.

“In all, Nexus 6 will come to 28 countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America starting later this year and as we head into Q1,” Motorola said.

Alongside the Nexus 6, Google also launched an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet today and the Nexus Player – its first Android TV device.
