Samsung announces the Super AMOLED Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge with curved screen

At its global unveiling event today, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 4, the latest addition to its family of Android phablets.

The Note 4’s 5.7-inch screen remains the same as its predecessor, but comes with several upgrades found on the Galaxy S5 such as fingerprint scanning and Quad HD Super AMOLED display, while the device is also water and dust-resistant. It is also equipped with a 16MP rear facing camera with improved light sensors, 8X digital zoom, and a 3.7MP selfie cam with a wide-angle feature expands the panorama from 90 to 120 degrees.

The Note 4 runs on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat), but reverts back to USB 2.0 support (the Note 3 offers USB 3.0 compatibility). The phone will include a rapid-charge mode that can go from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes.

The fourth generation Note also features improved S-Pen specs, with doubled pressure sensitivity and more capabilities such as handwriting recognition to perform actions like unlocking the screen or calling a contact.

The Note 4 will be available in Frosted White, Charcoal Black, Bronze Gold and Blossom Pink. Prices and availability vary by region, but will launch on T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.

Galaxy Note Edge

Samsung also announced the Galaxy Note Edge, which features a curved screen that wraps around the sides of the device, eliminating the bezel entirely.

The edge screen functions as a notification center (day and time, alerts, trending tweets, etc.). You can also use the edged screen in “night clock” mode to display time and alarms. The company is also offering an SDK for developers to create more functionalities for this extra screen real estate.
