WhatsApp is down [Update: It’s back]

WhatsApp is down [Update: It’s back]

WhatsApp, the popular Facebook-owned messaging app, is down.

According to hundreds of users on Twitter, the outage seems to have started around 30 minutes ago, and there’s no word (yet) as to when it might return. DownDetector shows the platform being down in the areas its most widely used, such as across Europe, and in parts of Latin America including Brazil.

We’ve reached out for comment as to what caused the outage, and when we might see WhatsApp fully-functional again and will update this post as needed.

Update: It’s now affecting most of the United States too. Previously it had been limited mainly to the East Coast, and wasn’t down for everyone.

Update 2: WhatsApp service was restored around 7PM ET / 4PM PT. The company’s support team shared the following statement with TNW:

Sorry for the inconvenience. We were experiencing a temporary outage. Our service is now restored. We appreciate your patience.
