Twitter may be coming to the Apple TV with NFL games in tow

Twitter may be coming to Apple TV soon, but only to stream NFL games.

According to a new report from The New York Times, it’s is planning to launch an Apple TV app with a focus on streaming sports:

Twitter is in talks with Apple to bring the Twitter app to Apple TV, which would potentially let millions of Apple TV users watch the streaming NFL games, according to the two people briefed on the discussions.

The report strongly suggests the app will have a streaming sports focus, but doesn’t specifically limit its scope to live events.

It would be nice to have an app that streamed sports and surfaced popular or timely tweets related to the content, too (a game streaming alongside hashtagged tweets about the game? Pretty amazing). Twitter recently found success with its Wimbledon streams, though they were limited to the mobile app.

Twitter’s other property, Periscope, has an Apple TV app which may serve as the blueprint. It surfaces curated content rather than providing a mobile-gone-TV experience. It doesn’t work well for Periscope, but may be a good look for Twitter’s own streaming sports efforts.
