Hipstamatic expands Snap, its iPad Magazine, to the iPhone and Web in search of more readers

Since debuting on the iPad back in May, Snap, a mobile photography magazine created by Instagram competitor Hipstamatic, is launching on the iPhone and Web to expand its potential readership.

As we previously explained, Snap isn’t just a giant gallery of vintage-inspired images; it’s a monthly culture and lifestyle magazine that explores artists, trends and tastemakers that span across industries and mediums. The magazine is free, and features regular sections and three themed feature stories.

Snap has found a niche for itself over the past six months, largely catering to Hipstamatic’s community of iPhoneographers, and has so far reached the #1 spot for photo/art magazines in the App Store, cracking the top 10 overall.

The company has yet to release official download numbers, however, which leaves us wondering if the magazine is limited in its scope to Hipstamatic’s existing user-base. Nevertheless, considering that Hipstamatic users are required to have iPhones, and do not necessarily own iPads, this was a smart move for expansion.

Despite losing out to Instagram in terms of consumer adoption as the default app for photo filters, Hipstamatic remains relevant to many mobile photographers. In fact, a recent cover of TIME magazine was shot on an iPhone with Hipstamatic. Additionally, film-inspired, sponsored lenses continues to be a common occurrence. Hipstamatic’s latest user stats tout 4 million monthly active users, with more than 55 million photos taken per month.
