Apple today released its quarterly earnings for the beginning of the year, and it appears the company is making more per smartphone even as sales decline slightly.

iPhone sales weren’t bad by any means. Apple sold a total of 50.76 million iPhones over the second quarter of the year. But that’s still down from the 51 million phones it sold this time last year.

On the other hand, Apple’s revenue from the iPhone increased, albeit just as slightly as the sales numbers decreased. Tim Cook made it clear that he thought the more-expensive iPhone 7 Plus was behind the growth, saying:

We are proud to report a strong March quarter, with revenue growth accelerating from the December quarter and continued robust demand for iPhone 7 Plus.

The data seems to suggest Apple makes more money per smartphone than before, and that might be because we’re choosing to buy the deluxe models. This might explain why the company is taking the risk to make the (potentially very) expensive iPhone 8.
