As a resident of the West Coast, the threat of an earthquake is ever-present. Being awakened by the house shaking is a scary experience and the danger of even the rather mild seismic events we experience here is very real. Worse, experts at NASA say there is a 99 percent probability that a moderate to major quake will strike California in the next two and a half years.
But I’ve seen the alternative, and it may be worse.
Wang Wenxi patented his earthquake-proof bed in 2010. Since then, he’s been working on improving the design to offer more protection as well as storage for basic supplies if an earthquake survivor finds themselves trapped in a bed — probably not as appealing as it sounds — for an extended period of time.
The goal was noble, but the bed itself looks terrifying.

You know how they say that you don’t want to look back on your death bed and have regrets? In this case, the bed may well be your death bed and your regrets are probably going to be buying it.
Thankfully, for now at least, this steel tomb masquerading as a bed is just a concept.
