What is a casteller? First, to define castell. A castell is a human tower built at a festival, particularly ones within Catalonia in Spain.

So, a casteller is a person who takes part in these intricate, “human castles.” In November of last year, UNESCO declared castells to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In the city of Tarragona, Spain, castellers gather every two years to see who can build the highest castell. This uniquely Catalan tradition requires strength, balance and a lot of courage.

See this beautiful video of one of the festivals, shot by Mike Randolph, a writer and videographer living in Spain.
