Remember Cuil? They wanted to take on Google by trying a new take on search. No? That’s okay after reading that Cuil.com has gone dark I had to think hard about the site and what it tried to do.
Word is that not only has cuil.com gone dark, but that employees are looking for new gigs and that this isn’t a temporary shutdown.
Is this surprising? Not really. Regardless of whether Cuil was a good company or not or if it had some “secret sauce” or not, the fact remains that Google has mindshare when it comes to “I need to find something on the Internet”. Any company wishing to challenge Google has a tough, tough road to travel.
