Meet the Nokia Lumia 505, a low-end Windows Phone 7.8 device headed to Mexico

If you are by now confused at the number of Windows Phone devices that Nokia is bringing to market this product cycle, take heart: there cannot be too many more.

Today, on its Facebook page, Guerrero Móvil, a Mexican carrier, posted the following image of the Nokia Lumia 505, a low-end device aimed at developing markets:

As the ad notes, the little device packs a, 8 megapixel camera. According to WMPowerUser, the handset is likely to run Windows Phone 7.8, and not Windows Phone 8, and contain the following specifications:

[A] 3.5 – 4 inch WVGA display, 800 MHz single-core processor, 256MB of RAM, and 4GB  of internal memory.

Given those basement specs, the device should be cheaper than a wood nickel during the Gold Rush.

The Nokia Lumia 505 is in fact a device that matters not because it’s impressive – it isn’t – but because it will help take the Windows Phone brand to places where it has yet to reach. More markets with well matched phones means more sales, which is exactly what Windows Phone needs.

Windows Phone 8 has been preforming well for Microsoft, but the company appears intent on selling Windows Phone 7.8 devices into the future as its low-cost devices. This is made possible due to the fact that  its last-generation firmware can run on relatively slow processors.

Time will tell how well phones such as the Lumia 505 perform, but at a minimum Microsoft is making a global play with its partners.
