65,000 Android units shipping out daily.

65,000 Android units shipping out daily.

That’s a lot of phones.  Now, bear in mind that shipping does not equal “being purchased by users”.  Regardless, that’s still a lot of phones.

Google’s Eric Schmidt announced the numbers at a shareholders meeting today at the Googleplex.  It’s certainly good news as Android continues to gain even more market share, and as Google needs to reinforce its game against the upcoming iPhone OS 4.

Schmidt clarifies with this: “Our partners are shipping about 65,000 Android handsets per day but if you check the blogosphere you’ll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low”.

Whether low or right on target, 65,000 phones/day puts Android firmly into the running with iPhone, of which Apple had sold some 8 million last quarter.
