Watch Uber’s high-tech cabs drive themselves in Pittsburgh

Last month, Uber announced that it would begin trialing self-driving cabs in Pittsburgh. The pilot program is now in full swing, and you can see these cars in action in the video above.

The vehicles – specially configured hybrid Ford Fusion sedans – are equipped with a large in-dash control panel and also have a human assistant in the front seat to take the wheel in case of an emergency. The company is inviting select customers in the city to take the autonomous cars for a spin.

Uber notes that it’s still early days for this technology, so there’s still a lot of fine-tuning to be done before self-driving cars can be rolled out more widely. In the meantime, it’s happy to test it in Pittsburgh; if you can’t get an invite to ride an autonomous Uber, you can try scoring by a seat by applying to become a vehicle test engineer or development vehicle operator.
