Squarespace now offers domain registration starting at $20 a year

Website builder Squarespace today launched a new feature that lets customers purchase a domain name straight from its site before using its design tools to put everything together.

The company says the move puts it in direct competition with the likes of GoDaddy and Wix – the latter of which is also a website builder.

Squarespace says at launch, it will offer more than 200 top-level domains, starting at $20 a year. Depending on your desired domain, that price can rise to as high as $70 a year.

Users can connect the domain to their Google Apps for a custom email, and the registration includes a WHOIS Privacy protection plan. It will also offer SSL certificates and domain transfers for free, but these features are coming soon.

The launch comes a week after Etsy just unveiled its own website building tool, Pattern, which lets its community of sellers purchase and manage custom domain names as well. However, Pattern uses a third-party partner to facilitate the domain registration, and a WHOIS plan costs an additional $3 annually.

Squarespace Domains are available today.

Editor’s Note: The earlier version of this article stated that the plans start at $20 a month. We regret this error.
