A new ‘premium certification’ will make sure your next HDMI cable can stream in 4K

If you’re like me, you’re probably not too picky about your HDMI cable. As we usher in the era of 4K, the HDMI Group has created a premium certification to make sure we get the best signal.

HDMI Group’s premium certification asks that cable manufacturers test their hardware at an authorized testing center. There, HDMI Group will make sure cables can stream a full 18 Gbps signal with a reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI) levels to eliminate unnecessary interference with your Wi-Fi signal.

In addition to 4K, HDMI Group feels its premium certification will be good for HDR video streams as well.

Once the group is satisfied a cable meets its requirements, the manufacturer can slap the ‘HDMI Premium Certified Cable’ badge on the packaging. Huzzah!

If you’re worried about spending an arm and a leg on an HDMI cable, you’re not alone. Let’s just hope that by the time you’re ready for 4K, Amazon has you covered.
