Twitter for Mac just got the most disappointing update ever

Twitter for Mac quietly got an update today, for the first time in more than a year, adding the new long direct messages feature to the client, but changing nothing else.

The app might as well be abandoned — Twitter has neglected to add support for a number of its new features over the last few years including:

  • Twitter video
  • GIF support
  • Twitter cards
  • Twitter music streaming
  • Improved quote tweets
  • Group direct messages
  • Quality mention filters
  • Blocking improvements

Why would the company push out an update today to add its latest feature, but not even add one of its other major features in the last year?

My guess is that Twitter simply gave up on the client when its dedicated developer left last year and adding long direct messages was a simple tweak: remove the character limit.

I had a glimmer of hope today when I saw the update, but was disappointed to see that the company put in the bare-minimum amount of effort. Can we just declare it abandoned now?
