You can now request an invite to beta test Firefox on iOS, sort of

We’ve known that Mozilla’s Firefox browser is coming to iOS devices for some time now, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard any updates until today.

Spotted by TechCrunch, there’s now an invite request page asking for a few details if you want a chance at testing it out, like which device you use, and how proficient an iOS app user you consider yourself to be.

To be in with a shot of beta testing, you’ll need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 8 or newer.

This still doesn’t mean a full release is any nearer, but a public beta probably isn’t too far away if the company is now looking to carry out some closed testing.

We’ve contacted Mozilla to see if it is willing to shed any light on general availability.

Oh, and it’s not going to exactly be Firefox as you know it either, as Apple will only allow Webkit-based browsers on its platform. It’ll likely keep a familiar feel and feature set though, albeit with a different engine under the hood.

Update: The sign-up page has now closed. Seems you all must have been pretty keen to get in on the program. It now shows the following message:

“We’re sorry, but we are no longer accepting new iOS Pre-Release candidates at this time. If you’re interested in getting the inside scoop on Firefox for iOS sign-up for our mailing list at the following address: www.mozilla.org/en-US/newsletter/ios/”.
