CEO out, SVP in: Groupon hires Sri Viswanath away from VMware to lead engineering and operations

Some people still believe in Groupon. One of them is Sri Viswanath, who has just joined the publicly-listed daily deals giant as its Senior Vice President of Engineering and Operations.

“Groupon has a tremendous business opportunity and a huge potential for further innovation,” the man even said.

Viswanath hails from VMware, where he served as VP of Research and Development for the Silicon Valley company’s mobile computing efforts (for a mere eight months).

Prior to VMware, he was senior vice president of Engineering at Glam Media and general manager of its publisher products group. He was also the SVP of Engineering at Ning (which was acquired by Glam).

Viswanath will report to interim CEO Eric Lefkofsky as the company continues its search for a permanent leader at the helm.

As you may have heard, co-founder Andrew Mason recently got canned, and was asked to leave both his CEO position and Groupon’s board.

The company recently reported underwhelming fourth-quarter financial results, including revenue of $638.3 million for the quarter, and earnings per share of -$0.12.
