It was only yesterday that we reported that man-on-the-run fugitive John McAfee was claiming to have falsified the metadata of a photo that placed him in Guatemala.
Well, it seems he IS in fact in Guatemala after all, after exiting Belize with the aid of “many supporters. He says:
“I apologize for all of the misdirections over the past few days. It was not easy to exit Belize and required many supporters in many countries. I am in Guatemala and will be meeting with Guatemalan officials this morning. If all goes well I will do a press conference tomorrow.”
Vice Magazine reporters joined up with McAfee in Guatemala after the programmer and McAfee security software founder went on the run from authorities on suspicion of murder. “Yesterday was chaotic due to the accidental release of my exact co-ordinates by an unseasoned technician at Vice headquarters,” adds McAfee. “We made it to safety in spite of this handicap. I had to cancel numerous interviews with the press yesterday because of this and I apologize to all of those affected.”
The McAfee manhunt started on November 12 this year, after Belize police noted he was a “person of interest” in relation to the murder of his American neighbour Gregory Viant Faull, who was found dead two days earlier at his home on the island of Ambergris Caye. McAfee has maintained his innocence ever since.
McAfee says he’s planning to post more details later today, so we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears to the ground. Well, to his blog.
