Some users were unable to reach Tumblr today, the team details what happened

Tumblr blogs appear to be down all over the world, though the main site seems to be functioning just fine. Complaints are popping up on Tumblr as well as Twitter.

In an attempt to keep up-to-date with Tumblr news, I regularly check staff.tumblr.com. I also sporadically visit notch.tumblr.com and thenextweb.com. All of them are down for me.

Yet a quick check with The Next Web staff shows this issue isn’t affecting everyone in the same way. Some report that all blogs are down, others say the blogs only work when they are logged in, and for others the blogs are loading just fine.

This Tumblr blog has an interesting theory:

DAMN IT, TUMBLR. IF YOU’RE GOING TO RANDOMLY ENFORCE THAT PEOPLE USE THE “WWW” ON URLS THEN YOU NEED TO FIX IT SO YOUR ENTIRE SITE REDIRECTS TO THE RIGHT PAGES. IT’S NOT THAT HARD.

In other words, if you’re having the same problem, try going to http://www.staff.tumblr.com instead of just staff.tumblr.com. This doesn’t work for me, but it might for you.

I have contacted Tumblr about this issue. I will update you if and when I hear back.

Update: The problem seems to be correcting itself. All Tumblr blogs are working fine again for me. If they are still broken for you, try doing a hard refresh (CTRL+F5) as your browser might be caching the broken sites. If you’re still having problems, do let me know.

Update at 3:15PM EST: “We’re investigating an issue that seemed to prevent certain networks from accessing Tumblr earlier today,” a Tumblr spokesperson told The Next Web in a statement. “The incident doesn’t appear to have been widespread and should have only lasted a few minutes.”
