Let the competition begin; HBO will no longer provide Netflix with DVDs

According to a report by Cnet, HBO will cease sending its new DVD titles to rental service Netflix.

While new titles won’t be available for rent on Netflix, existing titles are safe says Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey:

Netflix will continue to provide HBO titles on DVD and Blu-ray.

With Netflix starting to create its own series, and causing an uproar of happiness and joy with its decision to bring back the previously cancelled “Arrested Development” under its production arm, HBO’s decision might be a sign of things to come.

The message it’s probably sending? We’re competitors now, and you aren’t getting our goodies. HBO is clearly focusing on its own GO service, which is currently available on platforms like XBox.

If you’re a Netflix user, you know that HBO titles haven’t been available for streaming and it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon. With wildly popular shows like “True Blood” and “The Sopranos”, HBO has made huge waves with its original content. This move shows that they’re no longer interested in sharing.

This is just the latest blow to the DVD business at Netflix, which tried to break the service out as “Qwikster” but quickly backtracked.
