Today, Google has announced an ‘offline developer kit’ that crams a number of tools, SDKs and videos onto DVD’s for bandwidth challenged countries.
The kit is intended as a pilot test and includes a number of tools for developers, such as:
- The entire I/O Dev Bytes Series
- Full Google Udacity course videos (Android, App Engine, HTML5 games, UX, Mobile Web)
- The entire Android Website: http://developer.android.com
- Material Design docs from http://google.com/design
- Web Fundamentals documentation from http://developers.google.com/web
- The Google Cloud Platform docs from https://developers.google.com/cloud,
- Android, Cloud, and Design videos from the Google Developers YouTube channel
Google says 2,000 of the kits have already been distributed in Sub-Saharan Africa, India and Bangladesh, but those interested can find more information on joining the pilot here.
The move reminds me of Microsoft’s old MSDN DVD kits that it sent out regularly to customers with developer tools onboard.
