Google Research releases Music Timeline, a visualization of artists and genres over the decades

Google today released a new spiffy page called Music Timeline. The visualization tool uses aggregated data from Google Play Music to show how artists and genres have gained and dropped in popularity over the decades, as well as how genres and artists have risen and fallen in popularity.

Not only can you look at which albums from past eras are still in people’s music libraries today, but you can highlight key artists in each genre and read their stories, and of course navigate to Google Play and hear their music. You can also take a closer look at changes in the vocabulary used to name artists and their work, or search for a particular artist to see if they went multi-platinum or were just a one-hit wonder.
