Last month, Gearbox software teased a new release from the Duke Nukem franchise to celebrate its 20th anniversary, but didn’t let on about what we could expect. Now, it’s revealed that it’s re-releasing the genre-defining first-person-shooter with a bunch of new goodies, while staying true to the original.
Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary Edition World Tour will feature a whole new episode with eight levels set in locations like Amsterdam, Hollywood, Paris and the Colosseum in Rome – all designed by Allen Blum III and Richard “Levelord” Gray, the level artists who worked on the original game.
You’ll also find a new enemy type called the Firefly, which expands in size when it’s close enough to attack you; a new flamethrower-like weapon called the Incinerator should help you fight it off. Gearbox Software publishing producer Scott Warr told Gamespot that there’s also a new boss character at the end of the eighth level, but didn’t reveal much else about it.
Jon St. John has reprised his role as the voice of Duke Nukem; he’s re-recorded the entire set of lines and added new ones for episode five. In addition, there’s also new music for the eight additional levels by Lee Jackson, the composer on the original title.
If you’re hankering for some retro group gameplay, you’ll be happy to learn that eight-player multiplayer as well as eight-player co-op and one-player bot matches (with seven bots) will be included in this release.
This version features source code from the 1996 original, with few visual changes. There’s now an improved skybox and better lighting. It also brings the Rewind feature from the Megaton version, which lets you scroll through your progress in a level on a timeline and pick up from any point you like.
That seems like a sweet deal for fans of one of the most inventive first-person-shooters ever. It’ll be available for $20 on October 11 and you can pre-order it now for PC, Xbox One and PS4.
