DJI’s latest software update blocks drones from flying over Olympics venues in Rio

In an effort to avoid any untoward accidents during the Olympics that kick off tomorrow in Rio, drone maker DJI is issuing an update for its products that will prevent them from flying into and above venues for the various sporting events in the city over the next two weeks.

The update will designate those locations as no-fly zones for all DJI drones. The company received coordinates from the Brazilian military, which has been tasked with protecting airspace during this year’s Olympics. They include six zones in Rio de Janerio and one zone each in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Manaus and Salvador.

Of course, the no-fly limitations will only be in place until the events come to a close later this month. DJI notes that it has previously geofenced its drones so they avoid entering sensitive areas such as the locations for political party conventions in the US, the G7 Summit in Japan and the Euro 2016 football tournament in France.
