We’ve previously seen people cater to their pets over the Internet with the help of interactive systems for remote control like the Nest Cam and Furbo, but the project PleaseTakeCareOfMyPlant puts a whole new spin on this technology.
Developed by redditor tylerjaywood, it’s interactive remote control setup designed to take care of this houseplant located at his apartment.
But here’s the catch: instead of automating the system, tylerjaywood has left it up to Reddit to decide whether his plant will be watered or not.
You can decide the plant’s fate by heading to the subreddit dedicated to the project where they can vote whether the plant should be watered on any given day.
A new thread will be posted everyday where users can indicate their votes by simply responding with ‘yes’ or ‘no’. At the end of each day, the votes will be counted. Based on the outcome, the system will proceed to either water the plant or deny it of sustenance.
To make this more exciting, tylerjaywood has also integrated a webcam stream on the website where you can watch all of this happen in real-time.
The system is powered by a Raspberry Pi Computer with a custom program that you can peruse on this GitHub repository.
Vote whether or not you want the plant to be watered today here. Or go see how well the plant is doing right now on the webcam stream here.
