Nintendo 3DS game sales up 45% to 16m in 2013, as lifetime hardware sales top 11.5m in the US

Nintendo 3DS game sales up 45% to 16m in 2013, as lifetime hardware sales top 11.5m in the US

While Nintendo failed to make much headway with the Wii U, sales of its 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS portable gaming consoles and associated software continued to climb in 2013.

More than 16 million 3DS games were sold in the 12 month period, an increase of over 45 percent from 2012. The figure covers both packaged and downloadable titles from the eShop, although Nintendo didn’t disclose the distribution of sales between the two.

The 3DS library was bolstered last year by critically acclaimed titles such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Bravely Default and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

The frequency and quality of these titles appears to have had an effect on hardware sales too. Nintendo announced today that the 3DS console lineup, which includes the 2DS, has now passed 11.5 million units in the US alone.
