Update: Amazon announces its all-new Kindle Paperwhite, available to pre-order now in the US

Update: Amazon has announced the Kindle Paperwhite and restored the listing on its US store. It’s available to pre-order now and will begin shipping on September 30. A 3G-enabled version will then be released on November 5.

An updated Kindle Paperwhite e-reader was listed on Amazon’s site for a brief spell today, revealing a number of new features ahead of any official announcement from the online retailer.

It looks almost identical to the current Kindle Paperwhite, but offers a more responsive and higher contrast display, an improved built-in light and faster processing for a rather snappier e-reading experience.

Amazon also teased Goodreads integration and a tweaked version of Kindle FreeTime as “coming soon” to the device, ensuring that its software isn’t completely eclipsed by its range of premium Kindle Fire tablets. Elsewhere, the product page also listed a September 30 release date.

Amazon introduced Kindle MatchBook earlier today, a new scheme that offers readers discounted prices for titles that they’ve already bought as a hard copy. Is the timing coincidental? We think not.
