Facebook investigating reports that its service is currently blocked in Iraq

Facebook investigating reports that its service is currently blocked in Iraq

A Facebook spokesperson has confirmed to TNW that the company is looking into reports that some users in Iraq are not able to access the service as a result of new blocks put in place by the government.

Earlier today, people began reporting via social media that Facebook, along with YouTube and Twitter were being blocked under new orders from Iraq’s Ministry of Communications (MoC).

“We are disturbed by reports of access issues in Iraq and are investigating. Limiting access to Internet services — essential for communication and commerce for millions of people — is a matter of concern for the global community,” a Facebook spokesperson told TNW.

We’re not sure exactly how widespread the blocks are, but have requested information from Google and Twitter, as well as the MoC. We’ll update when we hear more from any of the parties involved.
