Tencent introduces TOS+, its open OS for smart hardware

Tencent introduces TOS+, its open OS for smart hardware

Chinese internet giant Tencent announced today the launch of its own operating system, cunningly named Tencent Operating System (TOS+).

The new OS is free and open to developers and manufacturers who agree to share their revenue. This is similar to what Google does with its Android OS.

TOS+ offers voice recognition and mobile payment systems which will operate on smart hardware devices as well as TVs and connected homeware. This puts the OS in direct competition with the likes of smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi and Asia’s biggest internet company Alibaba which recently announced its Yun OS.

Tencent’s mobile messaging app WeChat is one of the most widely used services in the Chinese region, so a successful OS could help secure the company’s position at the top of the consumer market.
