While its market share is drying up in the US, where it has lost ground to Android and Apple, it is a different story in Asia, and Southeast Asia in particular, where BlackBerry phones continue to be popular amongst consumers.
During a recent handset launch in Indonesia — which saw co-CEO Jim Balsilie visit the country — its regional managing director for Asia Pacific Gregory Wade claimed that RIM holds 42 percent of the country’s smartphone market with 4 million shipments per year. Wade describes Indonesia as “a very important market for RIM”, and the frenzy that accompanied the release of the device, which saw 3,000 queuing consumers, shows this demand.
Thailand and the Philippines are also markets where RIM is number one in the smartphone market, as the company revealed at its DevCon Asia event in December.
