Opera Max now allows mobile operators to offer subscribers free access to Android apps

Opera Max, the data-saving Android app, now has a new feature that allows mobile operators to offer users free access to select apps for a set period of time.

Dubbed App Pass, the feature is intended for use in developing markets where many users find mobile data expensive. Carriers will be able to offer trials of apps that subscribers may find useful at no cost to the end user.

With App Pass, users will be able to check out apps that they previously hadn’t tried on their own devices, and understand whether it makes sense to subscribe to a data plan for unrestricted access to them.

This is similar to Opera Max’s Web Pass feature, which lets users browse pre-selected sites for free while operators or sponsors bear the cost of data. App Pass is currently being tested by Telenor Digital in some Asian markets.

Opera Max launched last February and has since rolled out to several countries across Europe and Asia.
