Japanese messaging service Line aims to top Whatsapp in India by next year

Japanese messaging service Line aims to top Whatsapp in India by next year

Line_LogoJapanese chat app Line revealed today that it has topped 10 million users in India in the last three months — since it started its operations in July — and is aiming to double that figure to 20 million users by the end of this year.

Comparatively, WhatsApp revealed last month that it has more than 20 million active users in India. With Line’s ambitious target, this means that it is out to top Whatsapp’s users by next year.

Line CEO Akira Morikawa told the Press Trust of India that the chat app is also looking to introducing services such as e-commerce and music via its platform, though he declined to elaborate further.

Line also announced today that Sony India will pre-install Line on their flagship smartphones, the Xperia Z1 and Xperia C, and that Sony Music Entertainment will open official accounts on Line targeting Indian music fans.
