Qik unveils Qik Video Connect for iPhone, offers real-time filters and effects

Qik, fresh from its acquisition by Skype, has announced Qik Video Connect, an iPhone app that is capable of providing live video streaming, video calling and video messaging, launching later today.

Like Qik’s previous iPhone app, users can instantly share videos as they are being recorded. Twitter and Facebook accounts can be posted to directly from the app, inviting users to connect to your livestream as you are filming it. If livestreaming isn’t your thing, Qik provides the option to video call other Qik users, leaving video messages for them if they aren’t available.

There will be Qik two apps available on the App Store – Qik Video Connect, which is free, and Qik Video Connect Plus, which will cost $2.99

Qik Video Connect Plus is a premium app that provides users with options to customise their video chats and streaming by adding one of seven available effects and filters, adding them in real-time. All videos are captured in HD, streaming over 3G, 4G and WiFi networks, providing a very competent alternative to Apple’s own FaceTime video calling app, which cannot make or receive video calls over a 3G connection.

The two new iPhone apps add to the Android app that is compatible with the Sprint HTC EVO 4G, Sprint Samsung EPIC 4G, T-Mobile myTouch 4G and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The apps will be available on Apple’s App Store later today. For more information head to Qik.com.

Update: We have just received some clarification on when the apps will become available.

Qik’s premium app Qik Video Connect Plus will launch today, but its free counterpart is still awaiting approval by Apple. If you wanted to trial the free app before putting down your money for the premium app, unfortunately you will have to wait.
